Martha Stewart is apologizing once again for her controversial Halloween costume. The lifestyle mogul appeared on the Friday, November 6, 2026, episode of Today. Co-host Craig Melvin did not miss out on this opportunity and questioned her about why she had dragged him into the drama. He asked, “Why was I dragged into it?”
For those unaware, a few days ago Martha put the blame on Craig for having dressed up as a homeless person for Halloween. She revealed that he had accidentally spilled chocolate on her sweater during the show’s October 30, 2026, episode. Martha had apparently planned to wear the sweater to a Halloween party. But since that did not work out, she realized that it would be the easiest to dress up as a ‘bum’. She said:
“He spilled chocolate all over my white sweater, which I was gonna wear on Halloween night. When I picked up the sweater, I said, ‘Oh god, it’s so dirty. I only have 10 minutes to get dressed for this Halloween party.’ So the easiest costume was to get dressed up as a bum.”
Martha added that, at the time, since she had very little time to get dressed again for Halloween and she already looked pretty messy, she went for the homeless look. Back then, she did not realize that the costume would fetch her so much backlash from her fans. She said, “I looked at myself, and I said, ‘You really look hungry and homeless,’ so I wrote a sign that said, ‘I’m hungry.’ And boy, did that go off.”
Martha set the record straight while speaking to Craig, saying that she never meant to blame him for her decision. Calling it ‘stupid,’ Martha explained:
“I didn’t have a costume because you had spilled some chocolate on my white sweater — and I don’t blame you at all. It was a joke that I said I blamed you. It was stupid.”
Meanwhile, Craig Melvin revealed that he had already apologized to Martha for spilling the chocolate on her sweater. He said, “We moved on. But to be clear, there’s no connection between that and the costume later.”
During the same interview, Martha revealed that in reality, she has spent much of Halloween gardening and planting trees at her farm. This is why she had not prepared a costume, even though she is the type of person who normally goes all out for the holiday. She said that she previously had some of the most beautiful costumes over the years.
Martha Stewart then noted that, like the rest of the world, her grandson has also told her that her outfit was “tone deaf.” She apologized again by saying that it was not her intention to make fun of anybody. The actress hopes that there are “big steps” taken to ensure that the poorer citizens are “taken care of better.”
