Citizens to challenge a big calf farm for veal production in France

A group of locals wants to stop a planned farm for 560 calves for veal production in Verrie, in western France. The group is called Verrie Bad Trip. They will go to court against the government’s permission for the project.

The calf farm is a project of the farming company SAS Du Moyer, near Saumur. It would raise young calves for veal. Official documents say the farm can hold 560 calves at the same time.

Verrie Bad Trip collected over 9000 signatures against the farm.

The prefect (the government’s local representative) already approved the project. The case will go to the administrative court in Nantes. This court decides if public decisions follow the law.

Calves would stay inside

One report says the calves would live only inside buildings. They would not go outside to grass or have outdoor space. The floors would be made of slats (boards with gaps between them).

About 1,000 calves would pass through the farm each year, because different groups of animals would come and go.

Good housing is important so young calves can rest, move and behave normally. In 2023, European food scientists said calves should live in small groups with comfortable beds. They also said calves need enough space to rest and play.

The group says it will challenge the project and check if it follows the rules.
