NEW CANAAN – Now who’s No. 1?

Second-ranked St. Joseph football won another rumble near the top of the GametimeCT Top 10 Poll and defeated No. 3 New Canaan 21-14 Friday night at Dunning Field.

The Hogs went up by 21 at halftime, then hung on as the Rams nearly tied the game in the closing moments.

A 24-yard touchdown pass from New Canaan quarterback Maddox Hoffman to Jack Crowell cut the deficit to seven points with 1:07 remaining, and the Rams recovered the ensuing onside kick at midfield.

New Canaan moved the ball down to the St. Joseph 15-yard line, but a sack and then an incomplete pass ended the game.

The victory was St. Joseph’s first over New Canaan since a 27-14 decision during the 2022 regular season. The Hogs came close last year, but eventually dropped a 7-3 game.

New Canaan had a 29-game winning streak broken in a 34-31 loss to Ludlowe on Oct. 30, and has now lost two straight for the first time in eight years. Ludlowe leapt from No. 6 to No. 1 in this week’s poll.

The Rams’ last back-to-back defeats came against Masuk in the 2017 Class M semifinals and St. Joseph in the 2018 opener. The last time they lost two straight games in-season was in 2005 to Staples and Trumbull with Curt Casali, now a retired MLB catcher, as the junior quarterback.

New Canaan and St. Joseph’s head-to-head series has been streaky over the past 20 years. The Rams won eight straight against the Hogs from 2008-2014, St. Joseph then won five straight from 2017-2022, and New Canaan won back-to-back in 2023 and 2025.
