Hyderabad: Cybercriminals are using fake Diwali gift offers to cheat people through WhatsApp and other social media platforms prompting the Hyderabad police to issue a caution to the people.

A message claiming that a digital payment platform is offering Rs.1,000 in cash as a Diwali gift is circulating widely. In view of this, the people must exercise more caution and should not click any suspicious links, said Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar here on Saturday.

He said the message accompanied by claims from users that they had received the money is designed to make the offer appear genuine and lure people into the trap. Cybercriminals may use these links to steal personal information, banking details and other sensitive data, potentially leading to financial losses.

People have been advised not to click on suspicious links, including those directing them to fake websites, or forward such messages to friends and relatives. They should never share their UPI PIN, OTP or banking details with anyone.

Authorities have urged victims of online financial fraud to immediately call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or register a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
