Thanjavur: Southern Railway will ensure a comfortable journey for pilgrims coming to Kumbakonam for the Mahamaham festival in 2028, said R. Subba Rao, General Manager, Southern Railway, at Kumbakonam, on Friday.
He told media personnel that 25 lakh pilgrims are expected to arrive at Kumbakonam railway station. For the festival, we have taken up various works like station development, adding facilities like lifts, patch up doubling of railway track for 30 km from Sundaraperumal Koil to Aduthurai. This will help to operate more trains during the festival. We will also mobilise staff from various places to Kumbakonam to manage train services during the festival, said Subba Rao.
However, he ruled out the possibility of completing the doubling of the line from Thanjavur to Villupuram before the festival.
Thanjavur district railway users association has urged the GM to expedite submission of a detailed project report for doubling of lines between Thanjavur and Villupuram.
Citing the higher number of train crossings between Thanjavur and Villupuram, the rail users urged early commencement of track doubling works.
Association Secretary A. Giri, Chola C. Mahendran, president of the Federation of Kumbakonam All Traders Associations met Subba Rao and submitted a petition in this connection.
They also demanded the introduction of new train services via Kumbakonam, Thanjavur to Guruvayur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi.
