Early in the second quarter, Southwest was on its heels.

The Dragons had just given up a touchdown and returned possession to Southwest Legacy after a quick three-and-out.

Behind senior Raymion Thompson, the Titans were primed to ground-and-pound their way to a win in their season finale. They decided to pass.

On first-and-10 from his own 40-yard line, Southwest Legacy senior Aidan Garcia was picked off by Southwest junior Ty’Shawn Holder, who returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.

The pick-six flipped the game on its head, and the Dragons, helped by 193 yards from junior Dre Voss, closed out their season with a 21-13 win over the Titans Friday at Frazier Field at Dragon Stadium.

“We were reeling a little bit,” Southwest coach Alex Franco said. “The Legacy Titans, they had us. And then Ty’Shawn – I mean that guy is a player. He likes to play under the lights. He also gave up a big play earlier. We told him, ‘Next play mentality.’

“The pick-six changed the whole ball game.”

An unsportsmanlike penalty late in the first quarter gave the Titans a fresh set of downs. Two plays later, senior Thompson broke free for a 28-yard rush. Southwest Legacy continued its march down the field, and moved inside the Dragons’ 5-yard line, chewing up the remainder of the quarter.

Then, on the first play of the second quarter, Garcia bolted through an opening on the right side of his offensive line for a 1-yard score.

After a quick Southwest three-and-out, Southwest Legacy began its drive with a pair of successful runs from Thompson. Garcia then stepped back to pass. His offensive line gave him plenty of time, and his checkdown was uncovered to his left if nothing materialized down field. Garcia held the ball a beat too long and threw an ill-advised pass to the opposite side of the field where Holder was waiting for it.

“Honestly, I was scared I was going to drop it,” Holder said. “But to make sure I wouldn’t drop it, I kept my eyes on the ball. I played receiver for a long time, so I know how to catch the ball. I just executed.”

Garcia looked as if he’d shaken off the pick-six on the Titans’ ensuing drive as he connected with Bolden for a 16-yard gain to move into plus territory. But a botched handoff later in the drive gave the ball right back to Southwest. The Dragons capitalized with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Voss to take a 14-7 lead with 1:50 left in the half.

Southwest Legacy was in line to tie the game after Garcia’s second 1-yard rushing score of the night, but the Titans opted for a 2-point try. The attempt never had a chance as Garcia faced instant pressure and threw an interception.

Southwest entered the fourth quarter leading by just one point until Voss ripped a 67-yard touchdown with 3:44 remaining to put the game away. After Titans’ turnover-on-downs, Voss came on the field to run the clock out and suffered an undisclosed leg injury.

He missed the final snaps, but his team wouldn’t let him miss the Fire and Armor Bowl trophy ceremony. Voss’ teammates carried him to the presentation, as he’s carried his team all season.

“That guy hasn’t been healthy all year long,” Franco said of Voss. “He put us on his back this year and got hurt, had to get carried off the field. That’s what dreams are made of.
