Katy Perry And Russell Brand's Indian Wedding Ended With A Text, Why Was It Left Out Of His Trial?

Russell Brand’s trial and conviction brought his brief marriage to Kary Perry back into the spotlight. The comedian was convicted of rape and sexual assault, but his relationship with the pop star remained largely absent from the courtroom proceedings, as reported.

The former couple had a lavish Hindu wedding in Rajasthan, India, and only 14 months in, the marriage ended abruptly when Brand allegedly informed Perry that he wanted a divorce through a text message. Now, questions have emerged about why Perry’s name and her relationship with Brand were not discussed during his four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.

Why were Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s marriage details left out of the actor’s trial?

When Brand’s three-week trial commenced in a London court in October 2026, prosecutors had initially considered mentioning details of the comedian’s marriage to the pop star in their opening statements. However, a report by The Telegraph mentioned that Brand’s legal team argued that the relationship was irrelevant to the allegations being examined.

Ultimately, the prosecution agreed to leave the details out of the proceedings. Lead prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC addressed the matter during pre-trial submissions, saying, “The prosecution recognizes that matters post 2009 involving his relationship with Katy Perry may be sensitive, as may his previous faiths, and we are content to remove these from the opening.”

According to The Independent, Perry was not asked to provide a witness statement during the police investigation into the allegations against Brand. Reports say that the comedian did refer to the Fireworks singer during the trial, telling the jury that their relationship had contributed to his “staggering fame.” However, their subsequent separation was not explored.

On November 5, 2026, the jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court found him guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one charge of attempted indecent assault. The 51-year-old was facing two additional rape charges and one charge of attempted indecent assault, which were later acquitted.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s Indian wedding ended with a text message

Perry and Brand first met at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and began dating in 2009. Their PDA-filled romance was a highly publicized affair that moved rather quickly, according to insiders. The couple tied the knot in October 2010, and rather than having a Christian wedding, they traveled to India to get married according to Hindu customs.

The pair’s grand Hindu-inspired ceremony took place at the luxurious Aman-i-Khas resort near Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, India. The wedding featured traditional Indian celebrations, including elephants and a ceremony attended by family and A-list friends. At the time, the couple appeared to be enjoying a whirlwind romance, with their relationship attracting considerable media attention.

However, the happiness didn’t last long. On December 31, 2011, just 14 months into the marriage, Brand allegedly told Perry he wanted a divorce. He told her by text message, just minutes before she was due to perform on stage. That concert later became one of her most iconic performances after Perry revealed how her world fell apart just before she was about to grace the stage.

In a July 2013 interview with Vogue, Perry opened up about the sudden end of their marriage, saying she hadn’t heard from Brand since receiving that message. The Dark Horse singer told the publication, “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

The singer also described their relationship as controlling and emotionally difficult. She recalled that Brand struggled with her being in charge during her tours. Perry said, “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting.”

The singer also admitted that she initially blamed herself for the marriage ending. However, she later came to believe that the situation involved factors beyond her own actions. Perry revealed in the same interview, “I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go, and I was like, ‘This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me.’ So I have moved on from that.”

Russel Brand’s trial and Katy Perry’s life after their split

Brand’s criminal trial involved allegations from six different women concerning incidents between 1999 and 2009. The comedian denied the accusations throughout the proceedings. The charges followed a police investigation after allegations were made public in a 2023 investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.

Both Brand and Perry have since moved on with their lives. Brand married author Laura Gallacher in 2017, and they share three children. Perry, meanwhile, became engaged to actor Orlando Bloom in 2019. The former couple shares a daughter, Daisy Dove, born in 2020. She is now dating former Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. Perry has not publicly commented on Brand’s conviction or the allegations against him.

Following Russell Brand’s verdict, Judge Joel Bennathan indicated he should expect a significant custodial sentence. His sentencing is scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026.
