HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) stepped up inspections of hotels and eateries following a suspected food-poisoning incident at Saptami Grand restaurant in New Bowenpally, with officials checking food quality and hygiene at establishments across the Cantonment.

SCB health and sanitation officials issued a notice to Saptami Grand after customers reportedly fell ill following a meal at the restaurant.

The incident brought attention to food safety in the Cantonment, where officials have been inspecting hotels, tiffin centres and other food establishments. “A recent inspection at a tiffin centre in Balanagar included checks of idlis and other food items, according to a newspaper report. SCB officials have also been checking cleanliness and the conditions in which food is prepared, stored and served,” an SCB official told Deccan Chronicle.

“We noticed poor hygiene in some hotels; there’s an immediate need for more consistent inspections. Food contamination and improper handling can cause illnesses – regular checks are important, particularly at establishments serving a large number of customers,” the official said.
