Nebraska fired offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen amid an ugly midseason collapse.
The Cornhuskers let go of Holgorsen on Saturday, less than 24 hours after a 24-13 loss to Illinois, which extended Nebraska’s losing streak to four games following a 5-0 start.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed the firing in a statement, noting his frustration with the team’s offensive performance.
“While there are many areas that need improvement, our offensive plan and execution is simply not working,” Rhule said. “But simply, we need a change.”
Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas will take over play-calling duties for the rest of the season.
Nebraska’s offense has fallen apart over the past month after a promising start to the season.
The Cornhuskers scored at least 31 points in each of their first five games but have failed to reach 20 in any of their four consecutive losses to Indiana, Oregon, Washington and Illinois.
They have averaged just 13.5 points per game during that stretch, falling to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play.
The firing represents an abrupt reversal for Rhule, who defended Holgorsen earlier this week amid growing calls for a coaching change.
Just a few days ago, Rhule had high praise for Holgorsen and publicly backed his coaching staff.
“Dana Holgorsen is one of the best offensive minds of our generation,” Rhule said during his Monday press conference.
But another disappointing showing on Friday proved to be the final straw.
Holgorsen joined the team and took over play-calling duties for the final four games of the 2024 season and remained in the role for the next two years.
The 55-year-old previously spent eight seasons as head coach at West Virginia and five at Houston, compiling a combined 92-69 record.
The Cornhuskers will take on Rutgers next Saturday before finishing the regular season against Ohio State and Iowa.
