Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh high court has ordered the state government to bring the school teachers appointed between 1998 to 2005 under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

A single bench of the Gwalior bench of the high court Justice Anand Singh Bahrawat observed that since the period of services of these teachers before 2005 were being considered during their promotions, they should be eligible for the OPS.

Around 99,000 teachers in the government schools appointed between 1998 to 2005 will be benefitted by the court order.

The state government earlier announced that the government teachers appointed after January one, 2005 will be brought under the New Pension Scheme (NPS).

The government had also brought the contractual teachers appointed between 1998 and 2005 under the NPS citing their regularization after January one, 2005.

The number of such teachers is around 99,000.

Karuna Sharma, a government school teacher, moved the Gwalior bench of the high court challenging such a move by the state government.

There are a total 3.45 lakh government school teachers in Madhya Pradesh.
