Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were once one of the most loved Hollywood couples. The duo met on the sets of The Mickey Mouse Club when they were very young, and years later, they reconnected. By 1999, Justin and Britney were considered the sweetest couple in Hollywood. While they would leave people in awe with their romance, not everything was as good as it seemed to be.
Justin and Britney parted ways in 2002, and afterward the former’s song, Cry Me River, sent shockwaves through the public, leading many to believe the Gimme More singer cheated. Britney never really talked about it, and Justin never clarified anything, but speculation was that she cheated on him.
Justin Timberlake’s What Goes Around… Comes Around was not about Britney Spears
In her memoir, Britney admitted to having cheated on Justin, but mentioned that it was a one-time thing, while adding that he continued cheating on her. Britney also mentioned that she got pregnant with Justin’s child; however, she had to choose abortion, as Justin didn’t want to be a dad. Reports claimed that Justin will soon release a docuseries, where he will possibly address all of these claims Britney made in her memoir.

The docuseries will reportedly be released in December 2026; however, in another interview, Timberlake said that one of his songs, widely speculated to be meant for Britney, was not. The song, What Goes Around… Comes Around, which was from the album FutureSex/LoveSounds, was released four years after the breakup of Britney and Timberlake; it didn’t stop people from thinking that it was meant for the Toxic singer.
However, in a recent interview on Complex’s Re-Rank, Timberlake mentioned that the story of the song was not his personal story. He shared that his friend was going through a breakup and that he would open up to the singer, leaving him inspired to pen the song. Speaking of What Goes Around… Comes Around being about one of his friends’ breakups, Justin said:
“Maybe I should dispel a rumor at this point, which has gone around forever, which is like, it’s not a personal story from mine. It’s actually a personal story from a friend’s. I asked permission. He was just going through it and he was telling me what had happened and I said, ‘Do you mind if I write about this?’ And I quote, my friend said, ‘Yeah, torch that b**ch. What goes around comes around.’ And I was like, ‘I have to go. Thank you.'”
Justin Timberlake’s creativity was just flourishing, and he penned the song quite quickly, 20 minutes to be exact. He talked about the same recently while mentioning that it took him just a few minutes to finish the song, and they shot a 10-minute video for the music video. What Goes Around… Comes Around turned out to be a hit, and people instantly had the idea that it was about his ex, Britney, something that Timberlake has now dismissed. He said:
“This song was written in, I mean, damn near 20 minutes. Like, it was just flowing. The interlude that goes with it, like it’s just, and then you put the video with it, there’s a 10-minute video we shot for it, like this just hit on all cylinders for me.”
Britney Spears reacted to cheating allegations against her
On the other hand, Cry Me River, which was released just after Britney and Timberlake’s split, featured someone who looked exactly like the Oops!… I Did It Again singer. The song hinted at a boy who had to face cheating, and he was left heartbroken. While Britney initially didn’t speak directly about it, in her memoir, she admitted to cheating on Timberlake with choreographer Wade Robson. She also shared that this was a one-time thing she did, but Justin continued to cheat on her throughout their relationship.
