Giants pull their Jonathan Taylor offer in latest NFL trade deadline twist

The Giants have a need at running back and made an offer to the Colts for Jonathan Taylor — but it’s off the table for now.

They offered second and fifth-round picks for Taylor — the three-time Pro Bowler who’s one of the stars remaining on an Indianapolis team that keeps selling ahead of the trade deadline Tuesday — “a couple weeks ago” but pulled it unless the asking price drops, according to Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer.

“Unless the Colts come down from it, I don’t see that happening for Jonathan Taylor,” Glazer said on “Fox NFL Sunday,” “and I don’t think they have as much interest as they initially thought.”

It’s unclear what draft year the picks were for, but while the Giants own a second-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, they dealt their fifth-round selection to the Vikings to land quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

The Giants became one of the possible options for Taylor after cycling through four running backs this season — Cam Skattebo, Devin Singletary, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and the since-released Najee Harris — without anyone emerging as the top option.

Taylor has averaged a career-low 4.1 yards per carry this season, collecting 610 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through eight games, and sits on a Colts team that already traded offensive lineman Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks and DeForest Buckner to the 49ers.

“At this point, the hay is in the barn now,” Taylor, who is under contract through the end of the 2028 season, told reporters last week when asked about a trade request. “We’re preparing for the Dallas Cowboys. We got a home game. After last week, nothing else matters. We just gotta give these fans a win. We gotta put out a great, premium product. Can’t be what we put up last week. Can’t be.”

“NFL on Prime” reporter James Palmer reported last week that the Vikings, Packers and Broncos are other teams all interested in acquiring Taylor and adding a boost to their backfield ahead of a playoff push.

With Skattebo inactive Sunday due to a hamstring injury and Tracy on injured reserve with a hamstring injury of his own, Singletary started for the Giants against the Eagles and took the first two carries on their opening drive.
