Chiefs stretch lead to 21-12 on Travis Kelce TD on fourth down

The Chiefs couldn’t get the job done near the end zone at the end of last Sunday’s loss to the Broncos, but they had more success early in the third quarter this Sunday.

Head coach Andy Reid opted to go for it on fourth down after Patrick Mahomes was stopped by the Jets at the 1-yard-line and Mahomes sent a two-handed chest pass to tight end Travis Kelce behind the right side of the line. Kelce barreled into the end zone for his 87th career touchdown and the Chiefs are now up 21-12.

Kelce’s score was ruled a rushing touchdown. It’s the third time he’s scored that way during his career.

The Chiefs only had to drive 60 yards for the score because the Jets’ kickoff went out of bounds. That kick — and all of their first half kickoffs — was handled by fullback Andrew Beck. It’s unclear why the Jets went that route as kicker Jason Sanders and punter Austin McNamara have handled the duties in other games.
