PHILADELPHIA — J.J. McCarthy finally kept the ball on one of his zone-reads and now he is covered in uncertainty.
McCarthy suffered a hip injury on a hit from Zack Baun after a 3-yard run early in the third quarter for the Giants against the Eagles and had to go back to the locker room. He is questionable to return.
Jameis Winston subbed in for McCarthy, who tried to throw a warmup pass on the sideline and shrieked in pain. He grabbed his right side.
McCarthy went into the blue medical tent on the sideline for an examination and then ran into the locker room with trainers, presumably for further testing.
That’s the second time this season that the Giants lost their starting quarterback, after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending torn ACL in Week 2.
Jameis Winston, who started four games before giving way to McCarthy, took over after the injury.
If McCarthy is out for any length of time, it puts a serious wrinkle in the lowly NFC East race and in their plans to be buyers at Tuesday’s trade deadline.
