Tension between China and the Philippines is escalating toward a war-like situation. A major factor in this situation is the ongoing territorial dispute between the two nations over the South China Sea. Recently, China reported that it had driven away a Philippine aircraft and multiple vessels near disputed atolls in the South China Sea. On the other hand, Philippine officials claimed that China targeted a fishing vessel belonging to the Philippines. According to a Reuters report(December 13), the Philippine Coast Guard indicated on Saturday that 3 Filipino fishermen were injured and that a total of two fishing vessels sustained major damage when water cannons from the Chinese Coast Guard were discharged within a contested area of the South China Sea shoal.
How will this new aircraft pose a challenge to China?
In light of the escalating tensions, the Philippines is enhancing its military capabilities through the potential acquisition of additional assets to prepare for the possibility of being confronted with aggression from China if the dispute becomes more serious. An Italian defence manufacturer has recently provided the Philippines with an offer to sell Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. According to experts in the field, the Typhoon is an excellent choice for military modernisation, providing the Philippines with an aircraft that could compete with the Chinese J-10 fighter.
Leonardo, Italy’s defence manufacturer, has stated that it has always been dedicated to supporting the Philippines’ defence capabilities. An example of this is the proposed potential sale of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to the Philippines, where Leonardo has pledged to provide the necessary training, technology upgrades and other associated services.
The government-linked business known as Leonardo stated that it is making a long-term commitment to developing the defence capability of the Philippines and will support this commitment through training, technology transfer, and other related facilities included as part of their offer, as per the South China Morning Post report.
Which country is set to get the Eurofighter Typhoon next?
The company is pitching the Eurofighter, a versatile multi-role combat jet developed jointly through a consortium with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and British aerospace firm BAE Systems, to nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
Currently, Leonardo is extensively marketing the Eurofighter Typhoon worldwide. Recently, they reached an agreement with Bangladesh regarding their interest in purchasing the Eurofighter Typhoon. Bangladesh may potentially purchase 16 Eurofighter Typhoons in the years to come, as per several media reports.
What makes this fighter jet the deadliest and most expensive in the world?
The Eurofighter Typhoon has been developed collaboratively between European airline manufacturer Airbus and producer BAE Systems; Leonardo is another important participant in this program. One-third of Leonardo is held by the Italian government, which owns a 30.2 per cent stake in the company.
Reportedly, the price for each Eurofighter Typhoon is approximately US $117 million, making it one of the highest-priced fighter jets in the world, i.e. world’s most expensive fighter aircraft. The Philippines is securing multi-role aircraft as part of its $35 billion military modernization program.
