The BAFTAs began with what some called a ‘toe-curlingly awkward’ opening monologue as host Alan Cumming took to the stage and encouraged the audience of stars to scream
Alan Cumming turn as host of the BAFTA Film Awards left some viewers cringing as they blasted the ceremony’s ‘awkward’ opening.
The prestigious awards kicked off with Alan talking about the serious and somber nature of last year’s films, joking that real world events had inspired them and encouraging his A-list audience to take part in a “primal scream”.
The joke got a few laughs from the audience, which was filled with stars. However, fans were less enthused. “There is absolutely nothing funny about Alan Cumming? This whole opening monologue is toe curlingly awkward,” one fan said.
Another added: “Alan Cumming is making me cringe already.” While a third said: “Will someone purleeze get Alan Cumming off the stage.”

The 60-year-old actor, writer and presenter – known for hosting the US version of The Traitors and starring in American drama The Good Wife – hosted the event at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London for the first time on Sunday.
Others said it was likely not Alan’s fault but that of the scriptwriters. “I’ve got a funny feeling Alan Cumming might have been lumbered with the same scriptwriter David Tennant had when he hosted- oh dear,” said one.
Among the audience that were asked to scream by Alan were Prince William and Kate Middleton, who went to the BAFTAs just days after William’s uncle Andrew was arrested for misconduct in a public office.
William, who is the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, walked down the red carpet in a velvet burgundy blazer and bow tie, whilst the Princess of Wales for a purple a pink dress with a silver bangle.
On 19 February, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, as he is now known since having the title ‘prince’ stripped, was arrested by police. This was the first time since the 17th century that a member of the royal family was arrested.
