Alana Springsteen brought to tears after touching moment following death of Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek

Country music star Alana Springsteen admits she was brought to tears by the wife of late actor James Van Der Beek. The death of the beloved Dawson’s Creek actor last month devastated fans across the globe.

One of those was the 25-year-old singer, who decided to pay her own special tribute to the star. She performed a beautiful rendition of the theme tune from James’ iconic series.

At the time, she shared her touching version on social media, explaining the loss had “hit me hard”. And as her fans praised her performance, the clip was also lovingly shared by James’ grieving widow.

It’s a moment that Alana admitted brought her to tears. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, she said: “Oh my gosh. It brought me to tears. I mean, when I heard about his passing, it absolutely broke my heart. And I think so many people all over the world connected with that show and with this character, and it just brought people together.

“And I think music has such a way of healing and speaking more than words ever can. And so for me, I just wanted to play that song to honour his memory and his family and help support and I just hope they feel surrounded with love and community, even through the hardest time. It was really special to see.”

She continued: “That’s the power of music – and all art, really. We’re able to be a part of something that is bigger than just us and lasts so much longer than we’re here on this earth, and it’s truly an honour and a privilege to be a part of it.”

It’s that sense of emotion that Alana pours into all of her music. And she admits the therapeutic side of song writing has helped save her life over the years. Her latest release, Note to Self, is a soul-searching number that deals with the pain of her early years and lights her way toward a brighter future.

Describing the tune and her upcoming album, I Hope This Helps, she explained: “These songs were like my mirror through the past couple of years. They were like my roadmap. I’ve been on an intense journey of healing and deconstruction and parenting myself in a lot of ways. I think.

“I had an amazing childhood, but everybody kind of carries these patterns or truths and survival mechanisms that you picked up as you were a kid that don’t serve you anymore. So for me, it was a matter of going ‘what’s the life that I want to live? What things do I want to take from my childhood and keep and what things do I want to leave behind and not continue the cycle of’.

“So these songs really saved my life in a lot of ways, and my only hope is that they can help somebody else out there who feels just as lost, just as broken, just as misunderstood as I did when I was writing it. [I hope they] find hope and realise they’re not alone, and just give them a light to walk toward.”

Alana confesses that it’s this openness and rawness that allows her to connect with fans and is what makes music so great. “You might feel alone in something,” she said, “but then you write a song about it, and you realise, oh my God, there’s so many people are experiencing this and that feel the exact same way.”

And she is looking forward to a huge year ahead, starting with Country 2 Country Festival, before headlining her own European tour. Her latest album will also be released in May and it’s a piece of work she proudly says she has “poured my heart and soul” into.
