Amon-Ra St. Brown has mixed feelings about parting ways with David Montgomery.

The former Lions running back was traded to the Texans for a fourth- and seventh-round pick and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs On Tuesday.

On the podcast that he co-hosts with his brother Equanimeous, St. Brown said he was “sick” because of conflicting feelings.

“Selfishly, I’m sick because I love D-Mo,” the Lions’ star receiver said. “One of my favorite teammates, no matter what the situation was. We knew that he wanted more carries and wanted to play more. He never made it about himself. He was always all about the team, which I know is hard sometimes, especially in his position.”

“He’s an RB1 on 31 other teams,” St. Brown added.

Maybe that’s not entirely true, but Montgomery’s playing time was certainly starting to slip with Detroit. He’s shared touches with teammate Jahmyr Gibbs over the last three years, with his carries dropping from 219 to 185 to 158 in those seasons.

Meanwhile, Gibbs’ elite speed has allowed him to become one of the best running backs in the league. He’s hit the 1,000 yard mark two years in a row and has accumulated 49 touchdowns across his three-year career.

Though Montgomery still received consistent goal-line carries last year due to his bigger frame, it’s clear the Lions don’t need him anymore.

St. Brown compared Montgomery’s situation to that of receivers, where two or three can be on the field at the same time. For running backs, there’s often only room for one.

And for Detroit, that one is clearly Gibbs.

Now, Montgomery will pair with second-year running back Woody Marks in Houston’s backfield. The Texans also have former Bengals standout Joe Mixon, but his status is unclear as he missed all of the 2025 campaign with a mysterious injury.

Under center, questions still surround quarterback C.J. Stroud after two consecutive subpar seasons and a dismal playoff performance versus the Patriots. But Montgomery’s presence can ease the pressure on the third-year signal-caller.

Montgomery should get more consistent playing time with Houston, which has made the playoffs the last three years, and St. Brown is happy for his former teammate.

“I know how much he wanted to have a bigger role on an offense, and I think he’s going to get that in Houston,” St. Brown said. “He’s going to a good team where he’s going to be able to be the primary back, and I think he’s going to make a lot of noise.”
