Minutes after his LIV Golf Adelaide win, and two years into a comeback that had seen him disappear from golf for 12 years, and 16 years since his last victory anywhere, Anthony Kim was asked how he’d celebrate.
He said he might watch “Frozen.”
And over the next couple days while still in Australia, he said he might go see some animals.
“So that’s my fun,” Kim said.
If that sounds like a dad, it’s because Kim is. While much attention will be given to his victory on Sunday, he’s spotlighted his daughter, Bella, and wife, Emily. He said they inspired him to return. He made a point to find them among the Adelaide crowd seconds after winning.
All of it made a reporter wonder afterward:
After the win, after his disappearance and after his return, what lesson would Kim tell his daughter?
He said he had a few thoughts.
“I’m going to try to leave a lot of details out,” he said. “But I will tell her that before she came into this world that I didn’t feel any purpose in my life. Whether you have a lot of money, whether you have a lot of success in your life, you still can feel lonely and feel like the world is against you, and that’s in your own mind because I had a lot of people rooting for me. Obviously you saw out there how many people were rooting for me.
“But I just want her to know that no matter how bad your day is, if you keep fighting, you never lose.
“Hopefully she takes that with her for the rest of her life.”
His family emotions were also seen after his win was secured.
Four seconds after he tapped in, Kim pivoted to the left side of the green, where Emily and Bella were waiting. Bella then ran to Kim, and he picked her up before the three hugged for over 20 seconds.
What was that moment like?
“Obviously when Bella was born, Emily and my life changed,” Kim said.
“But to be able to share this moment, even though Bella won’t understand it, one day she will, and for her to be able to run on the green and see her dad isn’t a loser was one of the most special moments of my life.”
As to what his daughter is picking up on now, Kim laughed in response.
“I think she just wants me to make as much money as possible,” he said, “so she can have a good life.”
