The crew onboard Artemis II were left gutted on their mission to the dark side of the moon after listening to Chappell Roan’s hit song, Pink Pony Club
The Artemis II crew were disappointed after suffering a Chappell Roan blunder. During a NASA livestream on Saturday, the crew of astronauts on the Orion spacecraft was woken by the musician’s hit song, Pink Pony Club.
Currently, the crew are just hours away from flying around the far side of the Moon, which is expected to take place on April 6. This will be the furthest the astronauts have ever been from Earth as they explore the previously unseen side of the Moon, which is often tidally locked to Earth.
But with the team currently a quarter of a million miles away from Earth, bosses at space agency NASA had one hope of waking them up for their day of travel. However, things didn’t exactly go to plan.
With Pink Pony Club being one of the hottest tracks currently, it was only fitting that bosses chose this Chappell track. But this led to disappointment with the song cutting out just a minute in.
Commander Reid Wiseman said: “We were all eagerly awaiting the chorus,” with laughter being heard in the background. The Capsule Communicator was also heard as they promised to “try again next time,” before wishing the crew luck for their mission.
Wiseman is part of the team of four astronauts who took off from Florida on April 1 for the ten-day mission. On Monday, for around six hours, the Sun, Moon, and the Orion spacecraft will all be lined up, allowing the crew to view around 20 per cent of the far side of the Moon as it is lit by the Sun.
Now four days into their voyage, the crew has seen the far side of the Moon for the first time, with mission specialist Christina Koch describing the view as “absolutely spectacular”.
She explained: “One of the interesting things that happens when you look at a Moon that inherently just looks different is the darker parts aren’t quite in the right place. And sure enough, we got our lunar targeting information, and we matched up, and we’re like, ‘Yep, that is the dark side’.”
But there has been a very Earthly problem for them to deal with on board – the toilet is broken again. Until the capsule’s bathroom is fixed, Mission Control has instructed the astronauts to break out additional backup urine collection bags.
The latest reports are that the toilet in the tiny space capsule was making unusual smells after the crew previously reported a ‘burning’ smell. Koch radioed Mission Control saying: “Regarding the smell, I just wanted to make sure you all were tracking the EGS notes of the kind of burning heater smell that was coming from the toilet several times.”
The so-called lunar loo malfunctioned following Wednesday’s liftoff and has been hit-and-miss ever since. An issue with the toilet was potentially caused by the “freezing of the vent lines”, NASA said. A version of the Artemis II toilet was tested on the International Space Station several years ago.
Chappell’s involvement in the historic move comes just weeks after she spoke out following an incident with footballer Jorginho and his step-daughter in São Paulo.
