Lyon gets Australia underway

By Peter Ryan

The rain has held off and the Barmy Army has started singing Jerusalem after the first ball by Nathan Lyon before moving quickly into ‘That’s the way I like it’ by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Cameron Green to take up the attack from the other end.

Four wickets for Australia or 228 runs for England is the equation.

Heat on McCullum and Stokes

By Peter Ryan

England’s leadership will be under pressure after this Test if the result goes as expected and the Aussies take the four wickets needed to claim the series in 11 days of cricket.

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have been Bazball advocates from start to finish, and it has been a comprehensive failure. The reality is Stokes has not played in the style he advocated in either the second or third Tests which means there is a disconnect between his words and his actions. The coach has had no answers either.

A loss here and the questions post-play will be about their respective futures and whether Bazball will be consigned to history. It is that backdrop which makes today even more fascinating.

Jamie Smith will be on 2 off 30 balls and Will Jacks 11 off 31 when England resumes on 6-207 chasing 435 for victory.

Labuschagne’s day four brilliance

Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t been one of Australia’s most influential figures so far in this Ashes series, and logged scores of just 19 and 13 in this Adelaide Test.

But, as Dan Walsh reports this morning, Labuschagne illustrated a clear point of difference between Australia and England with a razor-sharp piece of fielding on Saturday.

Read Dan’s recap of day four here.

When will the Test end? Vote to tell us your prediction

With just four wickets in hand, England need an improbable 228 to win this Test and keep the Ashes Test alive.

What’s more, all their specialist batsmen are in the sheds, with wicketkeeper Jamie Smith (on an uncharacteristic score of two off 30 balls) and all-rounder Will Jacks (11 off 31) at the crease and the pace bowlers to come.

So, the question turns to what time the game will be wrapped up. Let us know what you think.

The Ashes is in Australia’s sights. Welcome to the final day.

By Peter Ryan

G’day and welcome to our live blog of day five of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, and the 11th day of play in this series.

It’s difficult to know how long we’ll be with you for today, other than to say we’re going to see this through til the final wicket is taken – or, less likely, the winning run is scored.

It could be a quick kill for Australia. They need just four wickets to win the Test and seal the series to retain The Ashes. England, on the other hand, are still 227 runs behind.

Play will kick off at 10.30am (AEDT), which is 10am in Adelaide … about half an hour from now.
