AC Milan leapfrogged Roma into second spot in Serie A after playing out a 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Bergamo on Tuesday.

Milan had the chance to close the gap on leaders Napoli, who won earlier in the day, to one point with victory. However, they were held by a disciplined Atalanta side yet to suffer defeat in the league this season.

Midfielder Samuele Ricci gave the hosts the perfect when his fierce strike from the edge of the area beat Atlanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi with less than five minutes gone.

The hosts’ response was positive and they looked the better side despite going behind.

They wasted a glorious chance midway through the half when Honest Ahanor blasted over from nine yards but were soon level when, in the 35th minute, Ademola Lookman opened his account for the season with a fierce finish from a tight angle.

After the break, Milan looked to step things up and missed a flurry of chances as the clock ticked beyond the hour mark.

However, with just minutes of the match remaining, Atalanta hit back and Davide Zappacosta was denied the winning goal only by a stunning one-handed stop from Mike Maignan.

It proved to the last real action of what was a closely-fought affair. Roma have a game in hand but, for now, Milan are up to second having lost just one top-flight game this term.

For unbeaten Atalanta, they move up to sixth.
