Catch up with all the action from Atletico Madrid vs Tottenham in the Champions League
Atletico Madrid take a commanding lead in their Champions League last-16 tie to North London, with a 5-2 win over Tottenham in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The match was effectively finished inside the opening 20 minutes as Tottenham collapsed under early pressure.
Atletico took the lead in the sixth minute when goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky slipped while attempting to play out from the back on his Champions League debut. Julian Alvarez quickly seized on the mistake and squared the ball for Marcos Llorente, who calmly finished into the bottom corner.
Tottenham’s problems worsened soon after when Micky van de Ven slipped while dealing with a routine pass, allowing Antoine Griezmann to surge forward and slot past Kinsky to double Atletico’s lead.
The nightmare continued in the 15th minute. Another error from Kinsky gifted the ball directly to Alvarez inside the box, leaving the Argentine with the simplest of finishes to make it 3-0.
Tottenham manager Igor Tudor had seen enough, replacing Kinsky with Guglielmo Vicario after just 17 minutes, but the damage continued.
Atletico struck again in the 22nd minute when Vicario initially produced a strong save from a Griezmann free-kick, only for Robin Le Normand to react quickest and head the rebound over the line.
Despite the chaos, Tottenham briefly found a response before the break. Richarlison held the ball up well inside the area and cut it back for Pedro Porro, who steadied himself before sliding a low finish past Jan Oblak to reduce the deficit to 4-1 after 26 minutes.
Spurs had a chance to add further hope late in the half when Cristian Romero rose highest from a corner, but his header struck the post as Atletico survived another scare before the interval.
Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dampened in the second half. Atletico continued to threaten on the counter and struck again in the 55th minute with a swift break. A clever touch from Griezmann released Alvarez through the middle and he finished past Vicario to make it 5-1.
Tottenham continued to create occasional openings, with Richarlison forcing a strong save from Oblak shortly before the goal, but Atletico looked far more dangerous whenever they attacked.
The visitors did pull another goal back in the 76th minute after a mistake from Oblak. The goalkeeper misplaced a pass under pressure, allowing Pedro Porro to feed Dominic Solanke inside the box. The striker turned quickly and fired a powerful finish into the top corner to make it 5-2.
Spurs pushed forward in the closing stages, but their efforts rarely troubled the Atletico defence. Archie Gray fired over from distance while Solanke saw another attempt saved comfortably by Oblak.
The match ended in concerning fashion for Tottenham when Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha collided heavily while challenging for an aerial ball in stoppage time. Both players required lengthy treatment and looked unsteady as they left the pitch, while Tottenham were forced to finish the game with ten men.
