Police are treating an attack on a house in Bangor, County Down, as a hate crime.

The incident was reported to police at about 22:10 BST on Monday.

The kitchen window of the house in Ganaway Walk in Kilcooley was smashed. Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.

Councillors in the area have described the attack as “contemptible” and “a senseless act of intimidation”.

Bangor mayor and Alliance councillor Gillian McCollum told BBC News NI she was “appalled” by the attack.

McCollum described it as “a senseless act of intimidation”, which was “designed to strike fear into this community”.

“This is a borough which we all belong to equally and I unreservedly condemn the people behind this action,” she said.

She encouraged people to co-operate with the police and help “to address this type of behaviour and stamp it out”.

DUP councillor Carl McClean also condemned the attack.

“Nobody, whatever the reason or motivation, needs to have that happen to them,” he said.

“Nobody here wants that. This doesn’t help any cause or person living here.

“Whoever has done this, I want them to know that they carry no support whatsoever from the people who live here or any elected representative.

“It’s contemptible.”

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.
