Audrey Hepburn’s oldest son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, has revealed how he really feels about the upcoming biopic of his mother, which will see Lily Collins star as the late icon

Audrey Hepburn’s son has revealed his true feelings about her upcoming biopic. American actress Lily Collins will take on the role of playing Audrey in a movie about the making of the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s, based on the Truman Capote novel.

Hepburn, who died aged 63 in 1993, had found stardom before appearing as New Yorker Holly Golightly in the Blake Edwards movie, which catapulted her to another level of fame. Lily, 36, confirmed on her Instagram page last month that she will play Audrey in a production from Alena Smith, which is based on the novel Fifth Avenue, 5AM: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman.

Sharing the news, Lily said: “It’s with almost 10 years of development and a lifetime of admiration and adoration for Audrey that I’m finally able [to] share this.” And now, Audrey’s eldest son, Sean, has spoken out and revealed exactly what he thinks of the upcoming production.

“I have to be honest, I’m very excited, because I like Lily very much,” he said. Speaking to Woman’s World, Sean, 65, added: “I’ve watched Emily in Paris as much as I could have.”

However, he hasn’t watched the fifth and most recent series of the show, which saw Emily shift her life from Paris to Rome. “I don’t think I can take that much, my teeth will fall out of my head,” he joked. However, Sean does have some concerns about the upcoming production.

“My big concern, because I know [Wasson] quite well, is the making of it, because the whole thing revolves around one photograph of my mother standing on 5th Avenue,” he said, adding: “I’m not sure how you adapt that into a film and make it interesting. There’s not a whole lot of drama.”

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was eventually nominated for five Oscars, with Hepburn up for Best Actress – it went on to win two – Best Score and Song. Although things could have been extremely different for the movie. Truman Capote, who wrote the book, had originally wanted Marilyn Monroe to star as Golightly.

However, Monroe was under contract with Twentieth Century Fox at the time and was said to have been advised to pass on the role as it would have been bad for her image. Her acting coach, Paula Strasberg, said: “Marilyn Monroe will not play a lady of the evening.” Shirley MacLaine and Kim Novak also passed on the chance.

This led to Hepburn taking on the role, against Capote’s wishes. He said: “Paramount double-crossed me in every way and cast Audrey. It was the most miscast film I’ve ever seen.” But the new movie, starring Lily will be the “first complete account of the making of the film”.

It will also touch on drama, including preproduction, as well as on-set incidents, including when a member of the crew was almost electrocuted while filming the opening sequence outside of the iconic Tiffany & Co store on Fifth Ave, in New York City.
