India’s star batter Virat Kohli once again reminded the cricketing world why he’s regarded as one of the finest fielders of his generation. During the third ODI between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Kohli produced a moment of brilliance that turned the momentum firmly in India’s favour. His sharp reflexes and perfect technique helped dismiss the in-form Matthew Short, a crucial breakthrough in the last match of the series.

Virat Kohli’s stunning catch lifts India

The moment came in the 22nd over of Australia’s innings when Washington Sundar bowled a flighted delivery on leg stump. Short, looking to sweep hard, misjudged the shot, sending the ball speeding toward square leg, where Kohli was positioned. In an instant, Kohli dived low and clasped the ball inches above the turf using a reverse cup technique – executed to perfection.

The crowd at the SCG erupted as Kohli’s teammates rushed toward him in celebration. His catch not only showcased remarkable reflexes but also underscored his enduring commitment to maintaining peak fielding standards. The wicket brought Australia’s score to three down, denting their early momentum and giving India a vital opening to control the middle overs.

Here’s the video:

Short, who had been in strong form this series, looked threatening once again before Kohli’s intervention. Coming off a half-century in Adelaide, the aggressive opener was building another solid platform before being dismissed for 30 off 41 balls. His wicket came at a critical juncture, as Australia were pushing toward a commanding total before losing rhythm against India’s disciplined spin attack.

With Short back in the pavilion, India tightened their grip on the innings. Bowlers like Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav began dictating terms, slowing the run rate and applying pressure on the new pair at the crease. By the 32nd over, Australia reached 171/3, with Matt Renshaw on 43 (44) and Alex Carey on 20 (32), both looking to rebuild amid India’s controlled bowling effort.

At the toss, India captain Shubman Gill confirmed that they have made two changes in their playing XI. Kuldeep Yadav replaced injured Nitish Kumar Reddy, while Prasidh Krishna came in for Arshdeep Singh.

“We would have bowled first. Have a target on the total and then try to chase down, I think we got what we wanted,” said Gill. “Hopefully this game is going to be a good one for us. Two changes. Kuldeep and Prasidh come in for Reddy and Arshdeep.”
