Film star and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna formally inaugurated on Sunday works for construction of the ₹790.38 crore Madakasira branch canal. The canal will carry Krishna River water lifted from the Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) project at Rachanapalli in Hindupur mandal of Satya Sai district.
The long-pending Madakasira branch canal will meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of Madakasira region on the south west of AP, which is also the highest point in the state.
Madakasira is severely drought hit due to poor availability of ground water. Any borewell has to be drilled up at around 800 feet depth. In addition, the entire constituency is almost surrounded by the Karnataka state, except the strip of land linked to Hindupur.
Balakrishna himself drove the JCB while starting the Madakasira branch canal widening and lining works covering a 71-km stretch from Rachanapalli in Hindupur mandal.
Irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, Hindupur MP B.K. Parthasarathi, Madakasira TD in-charge Gundumala Thippeswamy, and several other leaders participated in the ceremony.
The project is expected to significantly improve drinking water supply in Hindupur and Madakasira assembly constituencies, apart from providing assured irrigation to thousands of acres along the canal area.
Speaking on the occasion, Irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu observed that Madakasira branch canal is one of pet projects of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to fulfil the drinking water and irrigation needs of Hindupur and Madakasira areas by diverting Krishna River waters.
