Barcelona presidential candidate says he has made contact with Harry Kane’s entourage over summer move

Barcelona presidential candidate Xavi Vilajoana claims to have made contact with Harry Kane’s entourage about a summer move to Camp Nou.

Vilajoana is standing against Joan Laporta, as well as entrepreneur Victor Font and local businessman Marc Ciria with the election due to be held on March 15.

Laporta is the favourite but Vilajoana hopes to make a splash by making England captain Kane part of his electoral pledge.

He said at an event today: ”We have made contact with Kane’s camp. We have to work with prudence and professionalism. We study profiles, and Kane is one of them. He is a goalscorer, a team player and a ‘killer’ in the tight spaces that Barça needs.”

Kane has scored 88 goals in 85 Bundesliga games for Bayern since moving to the Allianz Arena from Tottenham in the summer of 2023.

Kane also linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia

Kane’s contract expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with Barca, as well as clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Bayern are eager to tie him down to a new deal and claimed earlier this month that they are in “intensive talks” with the 32-year-old.

Barcelona have also been linked with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez but Vilajoana believes the Argentina international may be out of reach financially.

“He is a very good player, he could fit in. I am one of those who think players must have immediate performance, as happened with [Robert] Lewandowski. Julian Alvarez would be in the mix, but there are also other profiles on the market,” he said.

“Right now, I would not spend €70million on Julian, but we need a detailed review of the club’s situation. The real possibilities will be known the day we enter the club and analyse the accounts.”

La Masia is key to Barcelona’s success – Vilajoana

Vilajoana is a former head of La Masia, Barca’s famed youth academy, and he insists continuing to introduce homegrown players into the first-team squad is vital.

He said: “We will go home if we do not find what we need. Each signing must be the best for the position and agreed by several people. It’s not worth signing for signing’s sake.

“La Masia does not have to be an emergency solution, it must be key and shielding it is the basis of everything.”
