Actor-director Basil Joseph is all set to mark a significant new chapter in his career as he wraps filming for Raawadi, his first Tamil film as a lead. The announcement was made by the makers, who shared a picture from the sets to confirm that production has officially concluded. The film is expected to arrive in theatres around mid-2026.
Basil Joseph takes centre stage in Tamil cinema
While Raawadi marks Basil’s debut as a full-fledged lead in Tamil, he has already had a fleeting presence in the industry. The actor made a cameo appearance in Sudha Kongara’s Parasakthi (2026), offering audiences a brief glimpse of his crossover into Tamil cinema. With Raawadi, however, Basil takes a decisive leap, headlining a project that positions him at the forefront of a new linguistic landscape.
Known for his effortless comic timing and relatable screen presence in Malayalam cinema, Basil’s transition into Tamil as a leading man has sparked curiosity. Raawadi, described as a comedy entertainer, seems like a fitting vehicle for the actor to play to his strengths while also introducing him to a wider audience base.
A fresh team and a vibrant ensemble
The film is directed by debutant Vignesh Vadivel, who steps into the spotlight after working behind the scenes in the industry. Vignesh previously assisted director Abbas A Rahmath on Fight Club (2023) and has also been involved in multiple advertising projects. Raawadi marks his first feature as a director, making it a notable launchpad for both him and Basil in Tamil cinema.
The ensemble cast adds further intrigue to the project. Alongside Basil Joseph, the film features a diverse lineup including John Vijay, Sathyan, Jaffer Sadiq, Noble K James, Arunachaleswaran PA, Shariq Hassan, and Aishwarya Sharma. With such a mix of performers, Raawadi appears to be shaping up as a lively, character-driven comedy.
On the technical front, the film brings together a team of promising talent. Jen Martin is composing the music, while Leon Britto handles cinematography. Editing duties are taken up by Barath Vikraman, and PS Hariharan is in charge of production design. Together, the crew hints at a film that aims to blend humour with a polished visual and auditory experience.
Backing the project is producer SS Lalit Kumar under the banner of Seven Screen Studios. The production also carries a personal touch, with LK Akshay Kumar, one of the film’s lead actors, being Lalit Kumar’s son. LK Vishnu Kumar joins as co-producer, while K Arun and Manikandan serve as executive producers.
Meanwhile, Basil Joseph’s slate remains busy beyond Raawadi. The actor will soon be seen sharing screen space with Tovino Thomas and Vineeth Srinivasan in Athiradi, directed by Arun Anirudhan. The film is scheduled for release on May 14 and is expected to further cement Basil’s growing presence as an actor across industries.
With Raawadi now wrapped and awaiting its mid-2026 release, the film stands as a key milestone in Basil Joseph’s evolving career. For an actor who has already proven his mettle as both a filmmaker and performer, this Tamil debut could well open the door to a broader, pan-Indian trajectory.
