The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced candidates for 13 more assembly seats in West Bengal. For the Bangaon (Bagda) Assembly constituency, the party has fielded Soma Thakur, wife of BJP MP and Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur.

In an interesting twist, she will be up against Madhuporna Thakur of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), who also belongs to the influential Matua family. Madhuporna is the daughter of TMC Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Thakur. This sets the stage for a unique political contest between close relatives — sisters-in-law — at the Bagda seat.

The BJP released its fourth list of candidates amid concerns within a section of the Matua community following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In a bid to consolidate Matua support, the party has again turned to a candidate from the Thakurnagar Matua family.

‘Family Ties And Politics Shouldn’t Be Mixed’

Speaking on her candidature, Soma Thakur said family ties and politics should not be mixed, calling them “two separate arenas.” She expressed confidence that Bagda remains a BJP stronghold and that the party will regain the seat.

The TMC had won the Bagda seat in the 2024 bypoll with Madhuporna Thakur and has fielded her again. She acknowledged the family relationship but stressed that the political battle would be fought independently.

The contest gains further significance as several members of the Matua community were reportedly left out of the final voter list after SIR, sparking tensions within the Thakurnagar Matua household. The focus now shifts to how the Matua electorate votes in this closely watched battle.

Polling will be held for the state’s 294-member assembly in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, with counting of votes scheduled on May 4. April 6 is the last date for filing nomination papers in the first phase.
