A cheeky celebrity called in to BBC Radio 1 to speak to Greg James and Myles Smith – but they didn’t recognise his voice because he was putting on an unexpected accent
When a celebrity is regularly making music and appearing on TV, you think you would recognise their voice.
However, one cheeky celeb managed to fool host Greg James when he rang in to BBC Radio 1. As he’d spoken to the presenter plenty of times in the past, he changed his name and voice to go undetected.
After introducing himself as ‘Steve’ from Exeter, Greg and singer Myles Smith attempted to guess the listener’s age. They asked a series of questions and didn’t notice they were speaking to an A-lister.
As his cover wasn’t blown, ‘Steve’ decided to reveal his true identity. It was none other than Niall Horan, who did an excellent job putting on a South West accent.
People were seriously impressed with Niall’s acting skills and took to social media to share their thoughts. One posted some applauding emojis and gushed: “He does sound like us from the South West.”
Another posted: “Omg I heard this on the radio this morning and didn’t even realise it was Niall.”
A third enthused: “The accent was really good!” And a fourth queried: “I want to know has Niall ever been to Exeter?”
However, some sharp-eared listeners did realise something was wrong. One laughed: “The way you could still hear the Irish slip.”
Niall is indeed from Ireland. He was born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, and takes great pride in his heritage.
His early musical influences include Irish folk music, which is one of the reasons he was inspired to learn the guitar.
Niall showcased his talent locally before auditioning for The X Factor UK in 2010. During the ITV talent show, he was grouped with four other contestants to form One Direction – and his life changed forever!
1D had multiple number one singles in the UK – including “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Little Things,” and “Drag Me Down.”
They scooped seven BRIT Awards, broke records for their ‘Where We Are’ tour in 2014 and sold more than 70 million songs worldwide before splitting in 2016.
Following the band’s break, Niall embarked on a prosperous solo career. He has scored two UK Number 1 solo albums – Heartbreak Weather (2020) and The Show (2023).
