A one-year-old girl has died after being hit by a freight train in the state’s north-west slopes.

The child was walking on Baranbah Street in Baan Baa, 1.5 hours north-west of Tamworth, and part of the Narrabri Shire local government area, on Friday night when she was clipped by the train, NSW Police said.

The road and train line intersect at Baan Baa, near Narrabri in the state’s north-west slopes.

She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious injuries. She died at hospital shortly afterwards.

The freight train was driven by a 22-year-old man who was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Narrabri Shire Council mayor Darrell Tiemens said the incident was “devastating” for the “beautiful people” of Baan Baa.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the little girl,” he said.

“This devastating event has deeply affected our close-knit community, and our thoughts are with the young train driver, the emergency service workers and the hospital staff who responded under such heartbreaking circumstances.

“For these frontline workers, it’s hard enough dealing with an adult fatality, but dealing with a young child when many of these people are parents themselves, is so difficult.”

Baan Baa is a tiny town which, at the time of the 2021 census, recorded 166 residents in 47 families. Tiemens described it as a “one-pub” town with a small church and community hall.

Police will address the media about the incident on Saturday afternoon.

More to come.
