Behind the Knicks’ latest backup point guard snafu — and where they could turn next

When Malcolm Brogdon unexpectedly retired, the Knicks were left with a problem that still hasn’t been solved.

Backup point guard.

The issue goes back to two seasons ago, essentially when they traded Immanuel Quickley. They’ve since given the job to Miles McBride, Alec Burks, Delon Wright, Cam Payne and Tyler Kolek. None stuck.

In the case of McBride, he’s certainly a capable talent, but it’s not his natural position. He’s a two-guard in a point guard’s body. And after learning more about what happened with Brogdon during the preseason, I’m not certain the Knicks were going to keep him, regardless.
