Hyderabad: India will see a ‘below normal’ monsoon this year, Skymet, a private weather forecaster, has said. Releasing its forecast for 2026 on Tuesday, Skymet said it expected the monsoon to be ‘below normal’ to the tune of 94 per cent (with an error margin of +/-5 per cent) of the long-period average (LPA).
The LPA is 868.6 mm of rainfall for the four-month monsoon rain period from June to September. Skymet said it had earlier assessed the monsoon to be subpar and its latest forecast was in line with its earlier predictions.
Skymet managing director Jatin Singh said the monsoon would be impacted by the formation for El Nino this year. “El Nino is expected during the early phase of the southwest Monsoon and will keep growing stronger till fall of the year. El Nino’s return may presage a weaker monsoon. The second half of the season is likely to be more erratic and irregular.”
According to Skymet, the core monsoon rainfed zone of central and western parts of India will see inadequate rainfall, while Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are likely to observe less than normal rain, especially during the August-September period. The east and northeastern parts will be placed better than the rest of the country, Skymet said.
