As the Super Bowl began to wind down, the NBC broadcast spoiled the color of the Gatorade that would be poured on the winning coach, and bettors flocked onto their prediction market apps to wager on it.
Just as the clock struck 10 p.m. ET, the Super Bowl was nearly over, and the Seahawks were about to celebrate their 29-13 victory over the Patriots, when the NBC broadcast panned over to yellow Gatorade being mixed in a big cooler.
The only prediction app offering markets on the Gatorade color during the game was Polymarket, so a few sharp users jumped on their phones to make a few bucks on an outcome that appeared to have been decided.
A few sleight of hand users could have made some big money, as the prediction market app had $2.125 million in trade volume on the market, meaning the max bid for some players may have been quite large.
Before the game, sportsbooks apps and sites had yellow/lime as the favorite coming in at +225 (30.77 percent), and those odds appear to have remained consistent throughout until the color was revealed live on the broadcast.
By 8 p.m. ET, as the Super Bowl Halftime Show was beginning to take shape, yellow was a slight underdog, with orange the betting favorite at 29 percent and yellow/green at 25 percent.
Perhaps there was a picture of a player seen with orange in his cup to spur interest in the color orange this late in the game.
Orange was +275 pregame at DraftKings (26.67 percent).
Betting on the NFL?
We’ve seen Gatorade color oddities previously with suspicious betting move the color purple from +275 to -130 by kickoff prior to the 2024 Super Bowl.
Sure enough, the color purple was poured on Andy Reid, the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning coach.
The last two years saw yellow poured on winning coaches, which is different than the previously two years, when the Chiefs had purple poured on Reid.
