Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard revealed on Friday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer – and she has since given an update on her health battle

Soap icon Beverley Callard has given an update on her health after sharing news that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The TV star is best know for playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street for over 30 years.

On Friday, the 68-year-old star was a guest on Ireland’s Late Late Show, hosted by comedian Patrick Kielty. During her time on the show, she revealed that she received her cancer diagnosis soon after she began working on Irish soap Fair City – which she has been cast in as a character named Lily.

Beverley explained that doctors told her she would require surgery and radiation to battle the breast cancer, and that the condition had been caught early. And she expressed disappointment that she would need to return to the UK for treatment so soon after starting work in Ireland.

On Sunday, the TV star shared more news about her health in an interview with the Irish Mail on Sunday. The Corrie icon revealed she was feeling strong, and took strength from the fact she is not battling breast cancer alone.

She explained: “I’m feeling fine, I’m feeling strong. I’m glad I’ve said it out publicly so it’s just out there for other thousands of women who are also going through it. But yes, I’m feeling really strong, a little bit scared because it seems a bit more real since I’m going back to hospital next week. But I’m really full of optimism.”

She added: “The biggest thing of all is I cannot wait to come back to Fair City to all the actors and the crew because they’ve just been amazing and I love the treadmill of being in studio, and doing one scene after another. The writing has been amazing and I just can’t wait for more.”

Over 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year, with Cancer Research UK stating that 76.6% of women survive the disease for 10 or more years after being diagnosed. And while the cause of cancer is not yet know, the charity states factors ranging from age, genetics, and exposure to risk factors can contribute to possible causes.

On Friday night’s Late Late Show, Beverley broke news of her diagnosis to 55-year-old Patrick Kielty. She revealed: “I’d had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally 15 or 20 minutes before [my first Fair City scene] I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous, thinking, ‘I hope everybody thinks I’m alright…’

“My consultant rang me and said, ‘You’ve got to come back to the UK’. I said, ‘Well, I can’t possibly, you know? I’ve just taken a new job.’ I said, ‘I’m away for a month’ – and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.”

After sharing her news on the Irish talk show, Beverley was met with a wall of support from those in the studio audience as well as those tuning in at home – and those discovering the news online. After a social media post was shared via the Late Late Show Instagram page which showed the star discussing her diagnoses, many took to the comments section to wish her well.

One wrote in the comments: “I’m so sorry to hear this! Sending you so much love , I have been on that journey.” And another typed: “Incredible woman. We’re all rooting for you Beverly and sending strength and love.”

And many other fans were amazed by Beverley’s positive outlook in the face of her news. One fan wrote: “You are so incredibly brave and uplifting. The most amazing energy.” And another wrote: “What an amazing lady inwill keep you in my prayers can’t wait to see you in fair city.”
