Reports circulating in international media and strategic circles have brought attention to the Blue Sparrow missile, following claims that it was used in a high-precision strike targeting a heavily guarded compound in Tehran where Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly present.
According to these reports, the missile was launched from an F-15 fighter jet and struck the compound with significant precision. The attack allegedly targeted a location where senior Iranian military commanders were also gathered. However, official confirmation regarding the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader has not been verified by Iranian authorities.
The Blue Sparrow is an Israeli air-launched ballistic missile developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. Weighing nearly two tonnes and measuring around 6.5 meters in length, the missile is capable of striking targets at a range of up to 2,000 kilometres.
The weapon belongs to Israel’s Sparrow missile family, which also includes the Black Sparrow and Silver Sparrow variants. These systems were originally developed as target missiles for testing missile defence systems but have evolved into sophisticated strategic weapons.
Often described as a “missile from space,” the Blue Sparrow follows a quasi-ballistic trajectory. After being released from a fighter aircraft at high altitude, the missile accelerates towards the edge of Earth’s atmosphere before descending steeply at extremely high speed, making interception by conventional air-defence systems difficult.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that missile debris believed to be from a Blue Sparrow was found along parts of the suspected flight path in Iraq following the strike.
The incident has reportedly heightened tensions across the Middle East, with several countries placing their armed forces on high alert amid fears of escalation. Iran has also been reported to have launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. and Israeli military positions in the region.
