Last year around this time, when Boston College’s season ended and NHL prospects considered their next steps, head coach Greg Brown watched as Gabe Perreault — a first-round pick in 2023 — signed with the Rangers.

Perreault burned the first year of his entry-level deal in exchange for five games of invaluable experience.

He made his Garden debut with former Eagles teammates in attendance, including defenseman Drew Fortescue, the Blueshirts’ third-round pick in that same draft who had just finished his sophomore year.

And last week, with Boston College’s season over and NHL prospects thinking about their next steps, Brown — five years after his final season as an assistant with the Blueshirts on David Quinn’s staff — went through the same process with Fortescue. As the Rangers navigate their retool and focus on the players who will shape their future, Brown’s fingerprints will be all over it. Perreault has blossomed on the first line and impressed with his vision while carrying the puck, collecting seven goals and 21 points across 39 games entering Friday’s match against the Blackhawks.
