Brady Cook could make first NFL start with Jets quarterbacks injured

Jets rookie Brady Cook looks like the most likely quarterback to start on Sunday against the Jaguars but coach Aaron Glenn was not ready to announce him as the starter yet.

Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee) did not practice on Wednesday, meaning Cook got all of the first-team reps. Fields was seen doing some light running on a side field while the media watched the start of practicing.

Glenn was not ready to rule Fields and/or Taylor out.

“We’ll see how this week progresses,” Glenn said.

The Jets signed quarterback Adrian Martinez to the practice squad as insurance if Fields and Taylor can’t go in Jacksonville. Martinez was with the Jets in training camp but was beaten out for the No. 3 job by Cook, an undrafted free agent from Missouri.

“There’s a plan for the quarterbacks either way it works out during the week,” Glenn said. “We’ve got all our bases covered.”

Cook played last week against the Dolphins after Taylor was injured on the second series of the game. He went 14 of 30 for 163 yards and had two interceptions. The Jets did drop five of his passes. Cook could benefit this week from a full week of practice with the starters.

“Man, that does a lot for any quarterback,” Glenn said, “especially with building continuity with the rest of the guys, set points as far as where he’s going to be at for the O-line, receiver-quarterback communication, like any time you get reps like that with the first team with a different quarterback, it always helps. So, again, it will be good for him, but again, we’ll see how this week progresses when it comes to our quarterback situation.”

One player that Cook likely won’t have Sunday is star receiver Garrett Wilson, who remains on injured reserve. The Jets could have opened Wilson’s practice window on Wednesday but did not.

The Jets had a long list of players not practicing Wednesday: Taylor, Fields, Breece Hall, Quincy Williams, Harrison Phillips, Mason Taylor, Azareye’h Thomas, Kiko Mauigoa and Stone Smartt.
