PHOENIX — MLB Network was in the midst of “Walkoff Wednesday” on Jan. 20, airing a Mets-Brewers game from Aug. 10 in which Isaac Collins opened the bottom of the ninth with a game-winning homer off Edwin Díaz.

Jett Williams was watching that rerun with his father, Richard, in his parents’ suburban Dallas home and, “Kind of joking, I said, that’s going to be my new team [the Brewers].”

It was like an alert to the baseball heavens needed. It wasn’t long after that reports of an imminent trade began infesting social media — Williams and Brandon Sproat from the Mets to the Brewers for Freddy Peralta. Soon his agent, Dan Lozano, called to alert him to take the reports seriously, just as Sproat was hearing at his offseason home in Pensacola, Fla., from his representative, Scott Boras.

“Jonah Tong also called me and he said, ‘Hey brother, tell me this isn’t true,’ ” Sproat said.
