Flights are grounded at Cologne-Bonn airport on Friday morning due to a security incident that may be connected to a technical failure.

According to police, the security area of the airport has been evacuated. No further details have been released.

A statement on the airport’s website said: “Due to police action, flight operations are currently suspended. Passengers are kindly requested to pay attention to the information provided in the terminal. We will keep you informed.”

According to local broadcaster WDR, newly introduced security technology in the passenger control area failed to function. As a result, objects may have entered the security area that were not checked by the new CT scanners as required.

It is still unclear how long the closure will last.

It comes after disruption to air travellers on Thursday during an all-day strike by Lufthansa pilots and crew.

We’ll add more details as we get information.
