Superstar singer Swims surprises fans in beer garden at Brisbane venue
By Alex Condon
US singer Teddy Swims, who recently performed at the NRL grand final and is touring the country, was a surprise special guest at the Triffid’s weekly Sunday beer garden show.
The soul singer was joined by Inoxia – who went viral singing a duet with Swims in Queen Street Mall in July last year – as well as Budjerah and Pace Randolph for his Ted & Friends pop-up show at the Newstead venue, featuring intimate versions of his big hits including Lose Control and Bad Dreams.
Hundreds of fans rocked up for the daytime set, which raised money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation through a raffle to win a signed guitar.
Swims backed up his Saturday-night show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre with the Triffid set, before returning to Boondall for his second concert of the tour. He next heads to Melbourne for three shows at Rod Laver Arena, then onto Adelaide and Perth.

People poisoned by rat bait may not know for days
By Courtney Kruk and Cameron Atfield
As health authorities warn Brisbane residents after five people suffered poisoning from rat bait at the weekend, an expert in infectious diseases says the symptoms can take days to be noticed.
Queensland Health issued an alert to staff on Saturday warning them to be on the lookout for symptoms related to the consumption of brodifacoum – a widely used rat poison.
It came after patients presented to the Queensland Children’s Hospital, Logan Hospital and Princess Alexandra.
Director of Infectious Diseases at Mater Health Professor Paul Griffin says symptoms of rat poisoning can take “many days” to be noticed, and he warns people not to be complacent.
“There’s a strong suggestion, from where these people are presenting, that the clustering is on the south side [of Brisbane],” he says.
“But because it can take a long time for the effects to be noticed, we certainly don’t want people in other areas to be complacent or assume that we won’t see a case somewhere potentially unexpected.”

A baby crocodile was filmed in a luxury Queensland resort pool at the weekend.
The animal was in the pool at the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort in Port Douglas, in a clip posted to social media.
The crocodile appeared to be not much longer than a metre, but guests were reportedly told to stay out of the lagoon pool until it could be caught.
This masthead has contacted the hotel for more information.
Fake $100,000 luxury jewellery not worth half that
By William Davis
A jewellery store has been raided by police over allegations fake Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels items that would have been worth more than $100,000 were on sale.
A safe filled with jewellery, gold bullion and cash was first searched at the business in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast in December 2023.

The pieces were seized and an investigation determined they were frauds, and worth no more than $28,000.
A 40-year-old man was charged with 22 counts of possessing or selling goods with a false trademark, which carries a maximum penalty of five years behind bars or a $181,500 fine.
“Selling counterfeit items and products is a deception and fraud that preys upon the goodwill and the back pocket of the customers involved,” federal Detective Superintendent Adrian Telfer said.
Sweltering week ahead across south-east
By William Davis
The daytime temperature in Ipswich is forecast to hit almost 40 degrees several times this week, and is expected to reach over 30 degrees every day.
The temperature is expected to peak on Thursday about 39 degrees in the city.
In Brisbane it should be slightly cooler throughout the week, but could still break 30 degrees a handful of times and reach 37 on Thursday.
“This time of year has always been temperamental,” meteorologist Livio Regano said. “We tend to get troughs moving west to east … and it raises the temperature.
“It’ll certainly be in the high 30s on Thursday and there could be storms around as well.”
The west is even hotter, with heatwave warnings for much of the state inland from Roma.
Rain is expected on Sunday, and also possible on Saturday.
