Kevin Federline’s memoir is said to have sent Britney Spears on a “downhill spiral” in the moments that led up the shock arrest of his ex-wife on Wednesday night

Kevin Federline’s book is said to have sent Britney Spears on a “downhill spiral” in the months before her arrest. The pop star, 44, who was married to Kevin, 47, from 2004 until 2007 and has Sean, 20, as well as 19-year-old Jayden with him, was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 PM on Wednesday night for driving under the influence, and it’s understood that she was booked early on Thursday morning, around 3am, after “speeding and swerving” in her sports car.

It later emerged that an “unknown substance” had been found in the Overprotected singer’s vehicle, but the whole incident unfolded shortly after Kevin released his memoir You Thought You Knew, in which he made several bombshell claims about his ex-wife, and now insiders have said that the tome was the catalyst that prompted her worrying behaviour.

A source said: “But the truth is, this has been going on for a while. Her behaviour has become increasingly erratic in recent months.” For Britney, everything has unfolded in the years after a conservatorship that gave her immediate family control over her multimillion-dollar fortune and several other aspects of her life were reversed.

The source added: “She goes from being fine to being not. It was the Kevin book that really sent her over the edge, and it’s been downhill from there. It really impacted her emotionally.”

The source went on to add that Britney, who is thought to have paid Kevin up to $40,000 a month in child support payments until their youngest reached the age of 18 in 2024, feels as if she tried to do everything for Kevin, and she was ultimately “exploited” when the book came out.

The source told PageSix: “[Britney] feels like she gave Kevin everything that he wanted over the years, She paid him so much money but he exploited her. He used her, he ruined her. And that was a really hard pill to swallow; it absolutely killed her that someone would want to damage her so much”

In his book, Kevin recalled how “stunned” he was as he alleged that the singer would drink alcohol whilst breastfeeding, and then claimed that she used to stand over their sleeping sons while holding a knife. Britney then responded to the claims via her reps, as they said: “All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir The Woman in Me.”

Kevin courted controversy surrounding the timing of the book because his child support payments from the megastar have ended, but insisted during a video-link appearance on ITV’s This Morning that he has done it all because he simply wants to get help for Britney while he can, whilst alleging that she remains pretty much estranged from her boys.

He began: “No, look, I could’ve cashed in whenever the dollar amount would’ve been extraordinarily higher, this is about me being able to tell my truth. She got to tell her story and I really felt this was the time, I waited til my kids were old enough to get behind it and this is what I’m doing!”

The singer has seen very little of her children over the years, and has worried fans with her alarming posts on social media. Claiming at the time that their eldest had seen his mother just once in the last five years, he said: “As of right now, Sean Preston has seen her once in the last five years, and that was January this year.

“Jayden has seen her a few times over the years as anybody who goes on her social media will have seen but it’s been a little bit of time since he’s been over there. They’re terrified and worried about her, and that’s why I came out for a cry for help in this [book] before it’s too late.”

He added: “I think the clock is ticking on this. This book is not only me being able to bring the truth to light but it’s a cry for help and that’s what we do for the people we care about.

“She’s vulnerable and it’s a horrible situation that I’m witnessing and the world is witnessing. We’ve tried everything else, interventions, rehab, so many things and nothing has worked.

“I’m crying to the public to step in and make this plea. Nobody can come in here and do anything, nobody can force her to do anything, the decision is on her now and if the public can get behind what I’m trying to do, we’re pleading with her, that’s what this is!”
