The actions of recruiters were unlawful as university-goers are exempt from military service, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said
The Ukrainian authorities have illegally attempted to mobilize a group of ethnic Hungarian students in the country’s western Transcarpathia Region, Budapest’s foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, has said.
The Hungarian media claimed on Wednesday that Ukrainian draft officers had deceived four students at the Ferenc Rakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University in the town of Beregovo into arriving at a local recruitment center. According to reports, the men were forcefully held at the facility and faced pressure to join the military.
Szijjarto later said in a Facebook post that the students had eventually been released.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry has been closely monitoring the situation, remaining in constant contact with the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association, which protects the rights of an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in the region, and the administration of the university, he added.
