A group of over 40 global animal welfare organisations has sent a strong letter to Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), asking for urgent action to regulate ships that transport live animals by sea.
These ships, called livestock carriers, are some of the oldest and most dangerous in the world. Most are over 40 years old and were not originally built to carry animals. Instead, they are old ships that have been converted to carry animals, which often makes them unsafe for both the animals and the crew on board.
Over the past 20 years, several major disasters have happened. Thousands of animals have died. More recently, the livestock carrier Spiridon II was involved in a tragedy in Türkiye, once again showing the serious problems in this industry.
