Kyler Murray’s time in Arizona has come to an end.

In a widely expected move, the Cardinals informed the 2019 No. 1 overall pick that they intend to release him on the first day of the new league year next Wednesday barring a trade before then, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

Murray, 28, is owed $36.8 million guaranteed in 2026, and another $19.5 million would have been triggered for 2027 if he were still rostered on March 15.

He reacted to the news on X, bidding farewell to Arizona.

“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us,” Murray wrote. “I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best. I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”

Murray earned the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year award, along with a pair of Pro Bowl nods, across seven seasons with the Cardinals.

He led Arizona to just one playoff appearance, falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 Wild Card round. Murray was 38-48-1 overall as a starter.

He made 87 starts with the franchise — throwing for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions — before getting benched for Jacoby Brissett in Week 6 of the 2025 campaign, signaling that the franchise may be ready to move on.

Arizona, recently hiring a new head coach in Mike LaFleur and GM in Monti Ossenfort, has wiped the slate clean as it embarks on an entirely new era in 2026.
