Former Countdown star Carol Vorderman gave a rare insight into her love life as she revealed how she is invited ‘all around the world’ to stay with her special friends

Carol Vorderman has given a rare insight into her love life as she revealed she travels across the world to spend time with her special friends.

The former Countdown star, 65, has been open about her love life, after divorcing her husband, but rarely shares details about her choice of enjoying a string of casual relationships – insisting she won’t apologise for how she chooses to live her life. Carol previously admitted she couldn’t think of ‘anything worst than being with a full-time partner’.

She also recently revealed she was currently just down to three ‘special friends’. But, yesterday on the Vanessa Feltz Show, Carol gave more insight into her intimate life when asked about her ‘special friends’ by the show’s host Vanessa Feltz.

TV star Carol said: “I think you met my husband, we were very happily married, had two children, and then, very sadly, the marriage broke down.” She added: “We were blissfully happy and then suddenly, we weren’t and I got to my 50s and I thought, I don’t really want to settle down.

“My children were older and I’m totally financially independent. I’ve got great friends. I have a brilliant social life, I love laughing, I love going on holiday with my friends. I’m invited all around the world to go and stay with people. So that’s what I do.”

When asked by host Vanessa, 64, if they were her ‘friends with benefits’. Carol replied: “Yes, I think that’s probably better.

“One of my friends is in America. We’ve known each other for 11 – 12 years, we don’t see each other that often but we talk all the time.” She continued: “Life changes, society changes, and now what we have for the very first time is a generation of women, my kind of age, our kind of age, who are more financially independent than our mothers ever were.”

Carol made comparisons to how the world has changed since she was growing up, she revealed: “Unlike when I was growing up, if you went into a pub that be one room where the women were allowed to go and another room where only men were allowed to go, there weren’t cafes, book clubs, all these different things that people can do. The biggest boom in the travel industry is solo travel.

“I have a wonderful extended family. I have great friends and that’s enough. I’m not saying that there wouldn’t be a time when perhaps that would happen, but I don’t ask for anything.”

Carol split from her journalist partner Des Kelly in 2007. She has been married twice – first to Royal Navy officer Christopher Mather for 12 months from 1985 to 1986 and then to Patrick King from 1990 to 2000. She welcomed two children with Patrick – Katie in 1992 and Cameron in 1997.

She has since revealed she feels “freer” with her special friendships rather than trying to maintain a monogamous relationship. During a 2022 appearance on This Morning, Carol explained: “Our mothers told us that we should marry when we were still 18 or 19 or 20, so we grew up with that convention that you should find one partner for life. My view is not quite like that.”

She added: “I live my life in chapters, and you said and this chapter since I was about 50. So for the last decade or so, I’ve lived a life which is much freer.”
