Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the iconic filmmaker Raj Kapoor on his 100th birth anniversary, celebrated on December 14, 2024. In his message, Modi highlighted Kapoor’s remarkable influence on both Indian and global cinema, describing him as a visionary and a cultural ambassador who skillfully blended artistry with social commentary in his films. He noted that Kapoor’s work resonates deeply with audiences, reflecting the aspirations and struggles of everyday people, thus transcending generations.

The centenary celebrations commenced with a grand event in Mumbai on December 13, 2024, attended by the Kapoor family and numerous Bollywood stars. Notable attendees included Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Aamir Khan, all gathering to honor the legacy of the legendary actor-director. The celebration also marked the launch of the RK Film Festival, which features a retrospective of ten of Kapoor’s classic films screened across 40 cities and 135 cinemas in India.

The festival aims to make these iconic films accessible to a wider audience, aligning with Kapoor’s vision of cinema as a means of connection and reflection. Actors from various generations expressed their admiration for Kapoor’s contributions; Madhuri Dixit Nene referred to him as a “passionate visionary,” while Amol Palekar praised his ability to portray the common man’s struggles on screen.

As part of the celebrations, Saira Banu shared nostalgic memories of Raj Kapoor’s friendship with Dilip Kumar, emphasizing the deep bond they shared since childhood in Peshawar. This centenary not only commemorates Kapoor’s cinematic achievements but also serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on Indian culture and film.
