Celebrity Bear Hunt featured stars such as Spice Girl Mel B, tennis ace Boris Becker, Lottie Moss, Danny Cipriani, Big Zuu, Shirley Ballas, Steph McGovern and Una Healy and more
Celebrity Bear Hunt star has claimed working with Bear Grylls on the show was ‘disgusting’.
Inbetweeners star Joe Thomas has reminisced about his time on Netflix’s Celebrity Bear Hunt. The now-cancelled show, presented by Holly Willoughby and Bear, saw 12 celebrities tackle various challenges and solve puzzles in Costa Rica.
However, one thing that stood out for comedian Joe was the stench of adventurer Bear. In a savage dig, Joe labelled the 51 year old as the ‘smelliest thing’ he has ever encountered.
In an interview, Joe said: “He is very smelly. There was a bit where he blindfolded me using the thing he’d have around his neck, I mean that sounds quite kinky, and genuinely he was like the f****** smelliest thing I’ve ever… I mean disgusting.”
“I genuinely think he might not wash at all because he’s trying to camouflage himself and he’s like if you smell nice that’s when the animals smell you. So I genuinely think he might not have washed. That was the smelliest thing I’ve ever smelled. It was like it’d gone beyond like old sweat. It was into a whole kind of new spectrum of smells, so that was a moment.”
The high-budget television show was cancelled after just one series in June. Insiders close to the show, which aired in February, said that while the ratings were good, it was costly to produce and Netflix are now planning to focus more on live events rather than pre-recorded shows.
One insider shared: “Everyone was very proud of the show but when it came to it, it was simply too costly to produce. You needed an entire set in Costa Rica, masses of crew and numerous celebrities. The expenses were staggering.”
It’s believed that more affordable filming locations were considered but none appeared suitable. Celebrity Bear Hunt boasted an stellar cast including Spice Girl Mel B and tennis ace Boris Becker, who wouldn’t have come cheap to secure, according to insiders.
Additional stars taking part featured Lottie Moss, Danny Cipriani, Big Zuu, Kola Bokinni, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Leomie Anderson, Shirley Ballas, Steph McGovern and Una Healy.
Holly Wiilloughby, 44, agreed to the programme following her harrowing kidnap ordeal involving ex-security guard Gavin Plumb, who was convicted last summer of plotting to abduct, assault and kill her.
When Grylls rang her, she disclosed she instantly agreed – a choice influenced by her three children Harry, Belle and Chester. “It felt like the right time for me,” Holly told the Mail at the time.
“When Bear called and described the premise of the show, I was like, ‘Okay, well, firstly it sounds like a great show, it also sounds like a show that my kids would love, my kids love Bear anyway,’ so it was a bit of a no brainer.”
“For a long time, I think because my kids were younger, I’ve always been a bit ‘ooh’ I don’t like leaving the country for so long, even when I went out to Australia for I’m A Celeb, kids came with me. It just felt like a really exciting project.”
“There are different shows and there’s always that real gut instinct when you say ‘yes’ and I think you just have to heed that, and this was definitely a yes on the spot.”
