The Canadian singer retired from performing at concerts in 2022 following a diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that made it difficult for her to sing
Celine Dion is reportedly returning to the stage. The singer has not performed a full concert in six years, after she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022.
Celine, 57, is said to be getting ready for a twice-weekly residency at La Defense Arena in Paris in September and October. This comes six years after she last headlined a show. Her last show was in Newark, New Jersey, in March 2020 and the rest of the tour was cut short due to COVID-19.
She was due to restart the tour in 2022 but the North American tour dates were cancelled because of severe muscle spasms. Since announcing her diagnosis, Celine has only done a few one-off performances, including at the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony where she sang Hymne A L’Amour from the Eiffel Tower.
French-Canadian newspaper La Presse were the first to break the news of Celine’s return to the stage, revealing it on 21 March. By the next day, posters could be seen throughout Paris, with the titles of various Celine Dion songs on them. The singer has yet to confirm if the reports are true.
At the time of her retirement, Celine said in a statement: “I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100 per cent.”
In an emotional video added to Instagram, she continued: “I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time and it’s been really difficult for me to face my challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through.
“Recently I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called the Stiff Person Syndrome which affects one in a million people. While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all the spasms I’ve been having. I miss you so much. I always give 100 percent when I do my shows but my condition is not allowing me to give that to you right now”.
Celine was rumoured to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel last year, and when she did not appear, fans started to speculate about her health. It was said that a secret health scare had forced her to pull out of the performance at the last minute.
However, her representatives insisted she was never meant to perform. “We would like to address the false reporting regarding Celine Dion and the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year,” they said.
“Celine was not in Basel, nor did she ever plan to attend, perform, or present at the event. Furthermore, contrary to certain claims, she does not own a private plane. Recent published stories are entirely false and potentially damaging since they suggest that she accepted the organisers’ invitation to attend in person and that her subsequent nonattendance resulted from ill health. This is completely untrue.”
The Mirror reached out to her representatives about the recent reports of a new residency.
